Recipe: Homemade Apple Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 large orange
- 1 lemon
- 3 Granny Smith apples
- 3 McIntosh apples
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large glass bowl zest and juice the orange and then zest and juice the lemon. Now peel, quarter, and core the apples making sure to remove the cores and seeds completely. Add the prepared apple slices to the orange and lemon juices and zests and toss them to coat completely. Pour the coated apples into an enameled Dutch oven pot with a lid. Spread the brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, and allspice over the apples and bake covered for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until the apples are soft. Remove from the oven and use a whisk to smooth out the apple sauce. Serve warm or keep in the refrigerator for several weeks.
